Plans to build a 15-floor tower in Meru are at an advance stage. Construction work on the building christened "Meru Rising Tower," is expected to start in December and take an estimated two years to complete. The building will house a conference and convention center, offices and shopping malls among other facilities.

The project is a partnership between the Meru county government and the Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC). The county government has set aside Kshs 200 million in the current budget for the project. A similar amount will also be factored into the next financial year's budget.

Once complete, the convention center will position Meru county as on of the prime meeting destinations in Kenya. Meru County Executive for Tourism, Ntoitha M'Mithiaru, believes that the project will boost tourism buoyed by the fact that Meru is on the Lapsset route.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the project is expected early next month
