Mathai's supermarket has opened a branch in Meru town joining an array of national retail giants that have set camp in the county in recent times.
Other retail outlets that have opened shop in Meru within the last five years include Nakumatt, Tuskys, Society stores and Magunas supermarket. They join Uchumi Supermarket and Budget Stores which pioneered the self service retail business in the county.
Clearly the retail business is booming in Meru. The entrant of Mathai's Supermarket and the anticipated launch of Naivas in the coming year is testament to the confidence that these giants have in the economic prospects of the county.
For now the competition is stiff and older entrants like Uchumi supermarket are feeling the pressure. Consumers in Meru county are spoilt for choice and the retail outlets need to be creative to lock in customers. The trend is now tending to product differentiation and the next wave in the scramble for Meru will see the establishment of malls. Some of these malls are already under construction.
