As Kenyans celebrated "Mashujaa Day" (heroes Day) on 20th October 2015, an important announcement was being made in Harlem, New York. U.S Congressman Charles Rangel and the Chairman of the Harlem Arts Alliance, Voza Rivers, declared October 20th Lupita Day. The ceremony was graced by the award winning actress although she did not know what was in store for her. It came as a surprise.

Lupita Nyong'o, who is without doubt a modern day Kenyan "Shujaa" announced the good news to the rest of the world through Instagram. "October 20th declared Lupita Nyong'o Day in Harlem," she posted. "My heart is swollen with the love and welcome I just received from Harlem community."

Voza Rivers said Lupita's connection and success in both continents (North America and Africa) and her influence on black communities everywhere made her the perfect candidate. Harlem is home to many of America's African-Americans.
