A section of Alliance Party of Kenya (APK) delegates are urging governor Peter Munya to vie for the presidency in 2022 using a new political party that they have resolved to form after the now imminent dissolution of APK.
It was decided during the meeting that since it is counterproductive to keep a party whose "owners" had decided to kill, governor Munya should be mandated to form a new party that would champion the interests of the people of Meru and those of Mt. Kenya East in general. Most of the members of the Meru county assembly were present.
Governor Munya enjoys an overwhelming support from Meru MCAs. Some of those who spoke at the meeting expressed disappointment with what they termed as Kiraitu Murungi's decision to "sell" the party. They felt that the region's interest would not be catered for adequately if they join JAP. However they have all vowed to support President Uhuru Kenyatta's re-election in 2017 in a separate political outfit.
The decision to propose Peter Munya as a possible successor of President Uhuru Kenyatta introduces a new aspect into the succession politics of 2022. Initially, it was an almost foregone conclusion that deputy President William Ruto would get the undivided support of Mt. Kenya in his bid to succeed President Kenyatta. With divisions emerging in Mt. Kenya East, which is APK's stronghold, William Ruto's support in Mt. Kenya seems to be in peril.
The political contest between Governor Munya and Senator Kiraitu is set to intensify going forward. Both will battle it out for the governorship in 2017. But until then, the political landscape in Meru will undergo a turbulent makeover.
