Meru Governor Peter Munya has denied claims by politicians that the proposed finance bill seeks to tax Miraa farmers. There were claims that Miraa farmers were targeted in the new proposals with some Meru politicians saying that farmers would be forced to pay annual land rates if the bill is passed by the county assembly.
The governor sought to ally fears through a brief post on his Facebook page. Below is the post.
"I wish to state that the proposed finance bill for this year has no intention of raising rates and other payments by the County government of Meru. It is unfortunate that some politicians and other people opposed to my government are misleading the public for political and selfish interests. I appeal to my good people of Meru to keenly read the document and put their opinion before it is debated by the assembly. I will reject any oppressive law brought before me."
