At exactly 11:57pm on Sunday 10th January, 2016 residents of Meru Town and Maua who were still awake felt the earth moving below them.
The shaking was accompanied by a rumbling sound similar to the one made by a passing train.
It was all brief. It did not last 5 seconds. But its velocity and strength was nothing close to a moving train. In any case Meru has no trains.
Even to majority of residents -almost all- who have never experienced an earthquake, the occurrence was unmistakably a tremor. In its wake it must have left several stone houses with fault lines.

Those who felt the tremor called friends and relatives to confirm they had heard the same thing. Others checked with neighbours and most were in agreement that something unusual had happened.
It is not the first time that such a tremor has hit Meru but the last time it happened, it was felt in some parts of Nairobi as well. This time though, the epicenter must have been within or very close to Meru county and so far nobody outside the county is claiming to have felt it.
