Ruth Gakii's family is now demanding compensation from her husband, Alphonse Kambu who works at UNEP.
Last week Kambu battered his wife after she allegedly refused to hand over their child to him. Kambu had demanded to take the child with him for reasons that are not clear yet. However Gakii has intimated that her husband intended to 'sacrifice' their child.
After the incident, Alphonse is said to have visited Gakii at Nairobi Women's Hospital where she was recuperating from the injuries he had inflicted on her. However he was prevented from seeing or talking to her. He told attendants at the hospital that he had gone to apologize.
After leaving the hospital Alphonse sent a text message to Gakii's father apologizing for what he said were actions he committed under the influence of alcohol. "I am deeply sorry Baba for what I did to Ruth... I am very sorry... and I hope you will find it in your heart to forgive me." read the text message in part.
Gakii's father has refused the apology and is now demanding Kshs 40 million in compensation from Alphonse before he can accept the apology. It is not yet known whether he would allow her daughter to reunite with Alphonse if the money is paid.
