Christmas came early for those who chew Miraa in Meru town after a Lorry transporting the green gold to Mombasa was involved in an accident at Gitimbine along the Meru-Nairobi road.

The six-wheeler lorry, which was filled to the brim with sacks of Miraa, hit a taxi (Toyota Probox) on the side as it tried to overtake another lorry which was also carrying the commodity. The driver of the lorry stopped to access the extent of the damage he had caused on the Probox. However, he took off on his feet after sensing that the wrath of the crowd would fall on him.

No casualties were reported in the rush-hour accident although both vehicles were badly damaged.

Residents of Gitimbine, majority of whom were leaving for their homes after work, descended on the sacks of Miraa in the unattended lorry. Gitimbine is just a few hundred meters from the Central business district and so news of the accident spread like wild fire and more people from Meru town joined in the scramble.
