The main stadium in Meru county will be ready for use in January 2016 according to governor Peter Munya.
The new 20,000-seater Kinoru Stadium at the heart of Meru county will have cost the county government an estimated 120 million Kenya shillings once completed.
It has taken the contractors longer than was expected but according to the governor, prolonged rains towards the end of last year and "financial constraints" are to blame for the delay.
In January, the terraces and the playing field will be completed. However, the second phase of constructing restaurants and changing rooms will begin and run as the stadium is in use. Other facilities that will be built during the second phase include a car park, shopping mall, gymnasium and rest rooms.
The playing surface is being built to international standards complete with a drainage system which makes it one of a kind in the entire country.
