Uchumi supermarket has closed its branch in Maua town.

The supermarket chain has been going through tough times which saw the Chief executive officer, Jonathan Ciano,  sacked a few months ago. The national government intervened to save it from going under when it admitted inability to pay billions of shillings it owed suppliers.

The new CEO,  Dr. Julius Kipng'etich, was appointed a month ago with a promise to improve efficiency, cut costs and return it to profitability in the shortest time possible. Part of his plan is to close some of the least profitable branches.

The Maua branch is said to be one of the worst performers on sales. This is partly attributable to the constantly declining revenues from Miraa farms occasioned by the ban of the product in the United Kingdom.

The fate of Uchumi's Meru town branch is not clear although sources suggest that it is one of the best performing in the country despite stiff competition from other supermarkets such as Tuskys, Samrat and Nakumatt.
